Vintage 2023

The year 2023 will remain etched in our memories — for us and for the winemakers of the appellation. On one hand, Gigondas unveils its long-awaited very first white wine. On the other, our estate reaches a major milestone with its first harvest certified organic.

Climatic conditions of the 2023 vintage in Gigondas

The year 2023 was historically low in rainfall, despite a rainy spring. The summer was hot and dry, though July nights remained cool. Temperatures intensified throughout August, culminating in a severe heatwave during the final week. This accelerated the ripening and concentration of the berries. Following this episode, a few storms helped to revive the vines, which had seemed to curl in on themselves, and restarted the maturation of the grapes.

The 2023 vintage wines in Gigondas are rich, fresh, and well-balanced

The result of the 2023 vintage is evident in the glass. The wines are rich, powerful, and concentrated, yet they retain remarkable freshness, likely thanks to the natural acidity in the berries. They are fruity and profound, with exceptionally silky tannins, making this a vintage that is ready to enjoy now!

Expect a well-balanced vintage, one of the most flattering in recent years! It combines the velvety texture of the 2019 vintage with the freshness of 2021, resulting in wines that are highly drinkable.

Great reviews for our 2023 Gigondas!

Gigondas Domaine Grand Romane red 2023

94/100  |  James Suckling
“A serious, well-built and structured red with currants, dark plums, bark and baking spices. Full-bodied, peppery and driven, it has plush tannins and plenty of power. Focused with a long, spicy finish. Drink from 2028.”
93/100  |  Wine Spectator
“There’s a pretty, floral lift to this red, with incense and lavender paste layered with a saline mineral vein, plus mocha and apple wood smoke details. The black tea tannins are nicely polished yet muscular enough to need a few years to unwind. A serious wine, with serious life ahead in cellar. Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah. Best from 2026 through 2036.”

Gigondas Romane Machotte red 2023

 93/100  |  James Suckling
“This dark and powerful red with a velvety texture is rather easy to enjoy right away because of its fleshy personality. It has stacks of damson-plum, wild-blackberry and delicate Mediterranean-herb aromas. The long, fleshy finish is beautifully balanced. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold”
93/100  |  Wine Enthusiast
“Driven by violets, crushed white pepper, and a granitic edge, the nose is focused and pure, offering a snapshot of its terroir. The palate is energetic and compact, with dark berry fruit wrapped tightly in youthful acidity and savory spice. White pepper lingers with freshness through the finish, making this both structured and approachable. A wine with poise, precision, and staying power.”

“A blend of 70% Clairette, 5% Viognier and the rest a combination of Marsanne and Roussanne, the 2023 Romane Machotte Blanc offers up aromas of spices, herbs, apricot, honeysuckle and spring flowers. Medium to full-bodied, round and enrobing, it’s sappy with delicate, elegant notes of butter and walnuts, framed around a juicy, precise mid-palate and a long, fresh finish.”

“Gorgeous Clairette character comes through in this alluring, streamlined white, with voluptuous fruit flanked by salt and crushed stone. Shows good density and freshness, with a tang of salinity. Delicious. Clairette, Roussanne, Marsanne and Viognier. Drink now through 2028.”
