Rhône Valley Crus

The Rhône Valley is one of the oldest vineyards in France. It follows the course of the Rhône, the river that flows southwards as it sees the vines blossoming on both sides of the river. There are two main areas: the Northern Rhône Valley and the Southern Rhône Valley. Both have very distinctive characteristics, starting with their grape variety: Syrah in the North and Grenache in the South. These two areas include the 17 Crus, which are considered as communal appellations, at the top of the hierarchy of Rhodanian wines. Some of them are among the most outstanding in France!

History of the Rhône Valley Crus

The Rhône Valley can be considered as the cradle of the Appellations d’Origine Contrôlée. Indeed, in the 1930s Baron Le Roy de Boiseaumarie fought for the recognition of the characteristics of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation, before fighting for that of the Côtes du Rhône appellation. He will obtain for these two appellations a strict production regulation. This will therefore be the starting point for the specifications of the various AOCs, with the creation of the INAO, Institut national de l’origine et de la qualité (National Institute of Origin and Quality), at the same time.
