Newsletter December 2012

2012 will remain a year full of twists and turns : a frozzy and dry winter, rainy spring, warm and dry summer… Our clay and loamy soils in altitude have once again shown their ability to moderate extreme vintages like 2012. The Equinox rains we had just after the harvest of Syrah benefited then Grenache, giving to the berries the juice needed to extract tannins and very concentrated aromas. The good weather which settled down afterward, allowed us to delay some of the plot’s harvest date : we peacefully waited for the full maturity to collect Grenache grapes for our top cuvée Gigondas “Le Pas de l’Aigle”. Cuvaisons then took place serenely during more than three weeks. Native yeasts quietly did their job. Wines tastings show a solid structure and a beautiful acidity (which precepts a great ageing able vintage). Having a good balance, ’12 wines are bright and fine.
Thanks to all the vineyard team and cellar crew which major activity theses past few weeks was harvesting and winemaking this new vintage !

2010 is the most compelling vintage in the Southern Rhône, isn't it ?

Yes it is for American journalists like James Molesworth (Wine Spectator) and Robert Parker. 2010 has a beautiful balance and a great freshness. It combines the aromatic complexity of the vintages 2007 and 2009, the tannic structure of vintages dedicated to ageing like 2005 and the acidity of 2001.
Our Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Paillousse, Vacqueyras La Grangelière and our Gigondas Domaine Grand Romane and Romane Machotte got excellent notes (between 91 and 93/100). Definitely to be mentioned, our cuvée Vinsobres Les Piallats, golden medal for the second year in a row at the Vinsobres selection.

Why not a Gigondas rosé ?

With honor this year again, our Gigondas Romane Machotte rosé, rated as one of the seven best rosés of the Southern Rhone by Bettane and Desseauve, most famous french wine critics.

Gigondas rosé represents a tiny part of the production for the appellation (approximately 1 %) today but remains a surprising rosé with its medium to light body, expressing the Northern exposure and the freshness of Gigondas terroirs. We elaborate our Romane Machotte rosé from direct press of 60% Grenache and equal parts bleed of Cinsault and Syrah. It shows a steady color and possesses wild herbs flavors and a solid minerality as well as freshness on the nose. In mouth, it has a crisp acidity and a long finish. This outstanding rosé is light and fresh enough to handle a hot day, yet has more than enough depth and texture to be versatile on the dinner table and to be appreciated with a little of maturity.

Opt for originality on your Christmas meals with a Gigondas rosé ! Recommanded on grilled spiny lobster, coast fishes or red mullets. 90/100 Rhone Report and 89/100 International Wine Cellar.
